Bloodborne Pathogen Training

Section 29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2) requires that the employer instruct each employee in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions and in the regulations applicable to his or her work environment to control or eliminate any hazards or other exposure to illness or injury. Under this provision, the employer is required to train designated first aid providers in the hazards of bloodborne pathogens.

Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms in human blood and other bodily fluids that can cause disease in humans. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The Bloodborne Pathogens course is designed for those who are at risk for on-the-job exposure to blood and other bodily fluids in the workplace and teaches how bloodborne pathogens are spread, how to avoid exposure and what to do if exposed to infectious material while in the workplace.

This two-hour training course covers:

• How BBPs are transmitted, including accidents, CPR, and more
• Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Type of bloodborne pathogens, including HIV, HBV, HCV, and AIDS
• Exposure prevention and control
• Best practices after exposure
• Common incidents and accidents that result in bloodborne pathogen exposure
• Other potentially infectious materials (OPIM)

Who Should Attend:

This course is intended for workers and supervisors who are trained and are designated first aid providers and who may have the potential of being exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
